The Creative Dr.Mihaly and His 10 Paradox

This man has done many works that are very influential and widely cited! The most famous one is his years of research and study that creates flow. He also wrote many books and articles about positive psychology such as happiness and creative.

In this post, I was asked to give comments on the famous 10 Dimensions of Complexity of the Highly Creative Personality by Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Or in human language we can see them as the 10 Reasons that Creative People Drive Us Crazy. Dr. Mihaly wasn’t joking when he named it “dimensions of complexity”. It is complex and ain’t simple at all. There are 10 of them and each of them is a paradox, a contradiction that’s frustrating to others when they exist together at odds in one human being!

Oh well, here they are, with my thoughts of them as an additional:

1. Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but they’re also often quiet and at rest.

From all of the 10 paradox, I think this one is the hardest one to understand. First of all, I’m not sure if a creativity is related to a physical energy. I may not be that open mind, but my thought of creativity is more attached to someone’s brain, on how it works and thinks like no one, outside the box, see the unseen, believe the unbelievable!

For an example is when Newton wondered why the apple fell from the tree and later found the phenomenal of gravity. The phenomenal that screw our high school with physics formulas! Hahaha…I don’t think Newton had to have a red bull energy to figure how the gravity works. Yes he had to move here and there, backwards and forwards to solve the formulas, but the creativity of his mind happened when he was sitting alone under the tree and simply do nothing. See, no energy needed!

Different with Oprah, she has the most wanted talkshow ever, she had to talk all the time, meeting people, go to one place and another, and be creative all in the same time. She produces her own talkshow, be an editor on her own magazine, and always active on many non-profit organizations. And yet, she still managed to be on no.1 on the most rich people in entertainment world according to Forbes magazine. I can’t imagine if there are times when Oprah can be quite and rest.

So yeah, as confusing as the other 10 paradox get, this one is REALLY confusing x_x

2. Creative people tend to be smart yet naive at the same time.

Hhmm….I have to agree on this one. Eventhough I tend to find naive people can be really annoying and stupid, I have to say, when you’re being naive is the time when you’re creativity most stimulated. Like how Santa Clause created.

It came from the naiveness of people who tried to teach the children all over the world on how to cherish the joy of christmas and have a merry christmas! It was a success and last as the long-awaited tradition in a year!

3. Creative people combine playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.

I don’t wanna sound self-centered but I think this paradox describes me the most ;D

I do think myself as a creative person, of course, since my dream job is to be a columnist, it’s a must-have-talent. If you check on my facebook profile, you will find playful in my Describe-In-5-Words box! And when you ask my siblings and childhood mates, you’ll hear how good I am at time management. I am so discipline that I could party hard in one year and lock my self in studying for the no.1 university in the country admission on the next year. I could be a rebel kid but seems to be the most responsibility daughter. I love doing it, I’m thankful for having it, and I am proud of myself for it!

4. Creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality.

The different between creative and imaginative is when you present your imagination in the most realistic way. When you think the unthinkable, people will deceive you. But when you show it in a firm grounding in reality, you’ll be the person who thinks out of the box! Like when I was a little girl, I have always fantasize to get in the same university with my dad. He is my hero and I wondered where he started. With work hard and God will, now I am about to be graduated from the exact same university with Dad.  Like I always said, I may be a dreamer, but I make my dreams come true ;]

5. Creative people trend to be both extroverted and introverted.

This paradox is quite confusing too. However, as I think about it over and over, I can see myself  stuck between those two. I can asure you that I am an outgoing person, and overly expressive person. I do thing impulsively  and feel a lot of feelings at the same time. On the other side, there are times, and it’s not rare, I feel like a typical self-absorbed person who concerned with my own thoughts and feelings rather than my surroundings. I realize that it is not a good thing, but looks like a good example for understanding the 5th paradox! haha..

6. Creative people are humble and proud at the same time.

A friend of mine looks like the kind of student who sits on the back of the class and listen carefully to the teacher without asking any question. But then when there was a disagreement in the class meeting and the whole class was in an awkward silent, he stood up and talked. His way of seeing the problem and giving the solution was very amusing and a relieved to the whole class. And I remember his papers always got the best score and compliment from the tutors because of his way of telling and writing down his mind that is simple, yet impressive. He is now known as the most creative guy and he always answer humbly when he asked. People looooove his work and also love to work with him!

7. Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotyping.

True, gender and whatsoever have nothing to do with a creativity. You’re creative when you are creative. J.K. Rowling is a very creative woman who delivers Harry Potter into our world. Without Steve Jobs, the man behind the most creative & innovative company, technology would not be as beautiful as my laptop. And thank’s to all of the feminine men who have been very creative on designing dresses and hairstyles that I could look good on every party!

8. Creative people are both rebellious and conservative.

To be creative you have to know the not-creative way. People often said that “rules are made to be broken”, to break it firstly you have to know the rules. Without being conservative you can not indicate whether you’re creative or not. But be rebellious to be creative. I know, looks like the egg and the chicken, which comes first? Be creative and decide ;D

9. Most creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.

The common thing happened is when you’re too deep in it, you can’t see the thing clearly. Eventhough it is a famous said, but people tend to forget it when they’re thinking too hard. Nick Lesson, the man who brought down Barings Bank (personal bank to HM The Queen) in 1995 and was sentenced to six and half years in a gang-ridden jail. How could one trader bring down the banking empire that had funded the Napoleonic Wars? Because it is not just one man, but it is a passionate broker who before made £10 million which accounted for 10% of Barings’ annual income in one year. It shows how a passion without an objectivity can lead into an end, like a talented man went into a rogue trader.

10. Creative people’s openness and sensitivity often exposes them to suffering and pain, yet also to a great deal of enjoyment.

Being a sensitive and an open person can make you the most lovable friend or the most uncool and needy person. By being sensitive to your surrounding feelings, you can have a high emphaty that makes you a good listener but also let you get hurt easily. But life goes on. So even if it hurts you, even when you breakdown and cry, I’d say don’t stop! Don’t let the bad things stop you because if you do, you won’t be there for the good things.

“Even without success, creative persons find joy in a job well done.  Learning for its own sake is rewarding.”

-Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

That was it, the 10 paradox creative people according to Dr. M and a slight of my thoughts on each of them. I did not agree on all of them, but what can I say, he is the one who spent years on the research and the study, and I’m just an under-graduate student who’s still trying to pass this class with A grade! Hope you’ll having fun reading it, xoxo.
